There seems to be some confusion regarding circulating magazines that LMS Serials Librarian Gail Ibarra and I would like to clarify.
Keep in mind that new issues of magazine subscriptions for locations that are temporarily closed are being distributed to open locations, rather than being boxed for long-term storage. This may result in a library receiving some circulating magazines to which they do not regularly subscribe. This is neither a problem nor a new procedure - they system is working the way it is intended to. It's just a lot more visible these days since we have so many locations closed many months now due to Harvey.
When you receive circulating magazines in Delivery or your customers return checked-out magazines, please discharge them just like any other item. They become part of your collection. It is not necessary to send them back to their original home library and they should not be shipped to LMS Serials, which is happening with increasing frequency. Also, any magazine that gets checked out at NLs then returned at CEN will normally go intransit back to the NL where it were checked out, just like any other floating item returned at CEN. Discharge those when those come back to you as well.
Add the magazines that float into your NL to the collection of circulating magazines. If you find that you have magazine titles floating in that your location doesn't subscribe to and just have proved nor to be interest to your customers after trying them out for a while, simply send them to the LMS Float Hub with your regular weekly Float shipments, **unless they meet weeding criteria because they are not in good condition or are older than the usual cut-off age for magazine circulation (typically about a year old). And, of course, you can also make trading partnerships with locations where those titles are more popular (e.g., non-English titles), just as you can with any other floating material.
